Statistics on the Integration of the Federal Judiciary
JTBF collects, preserves, and disseminates information about the integration of the federal judiciary to increase public awareness about the value of diversity in the law. The following documents include statistical data for Article III and Article I judges. Article III judges are appointed for life "during good behaviour" and earn "a compensation, which shall not be diminished during their continuance in office." Article I judges, which include magistrate, bankruptcy, and various legislative courts, hold office for such terms as Congress prescribes. For example, bankruptcy judges are appointed for a fourteen-year term by the circuit court judges and hear matters that arise under the bankruptcy laws. Magistrate judges are appointed for eight years by the federal district judges and assist district court judges.
