Just The Beginning Foundation (JTBF)

OUR HISTORY

"Just the Beginning" began as a celebration of the Integration of the Federal Judiciary on September 19, 1992, in Chicago, IL. The celebratory event entitled, "Just The Beginning - A Celebration of Integration of the Federal Judiciary" honored Judge James Parsons, the first African-American United States District Court Judge, on his retirement after devoting thirty-one years on the federal bench. At that celebration and for the first time in history, fifty-two African-American federal judges and hundreds of African American lawyers from across the country gathered to celebrate the history, struggles, and accomplishments of African-Americans in the law. Inspired by the events of that weekend, JTBF was founded as a not-for-profit organization of judges, lawyers, and other citizens who are dedicated to improving the legal system, preserving the history and honoring the legacy of African-Americans in the federal judiciary. Learn more about us.

Today, JTBF continues this mission by offering pipeline programs directly aimed at inspiring young students and increasing diversity in the legal profession and judiciary. Read More...

LAW STUDENTS - CLERKSHIP PROGRAM ALERTS

Judge Tanya Walton Pratt was just confirmed as a United States District Judge to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and she is in the process of considering candidates for a clerkship to begin immediately. Judge Pratt has asked the Just the Beginning Foundation Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program (STW). Judge Pratt accepts and is considering law clerk applicants of all backgrounds, and this opportunity is merely an effort in addition to, not in lieu of, traditional application channels.

If you would like to be considered as a Just The Beginning Foundation STW Program candidate, you must apply directly to Judge Pratt right away and identify yourself as a candidate who was referred by the program. Judge Pratt will decide which students to invite to interviews.

Share The Wealth Clerkship Opportunity:             September 18, 2010

Judge Gerald Bruce Lee (E.D. Va.) along with five of his colleagues, will be conducting a round of interviews in connection with the Just the Beginning Foundation Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program on Saturday, September 18, 2010, in Alexandria, Virginia. Twelve students will be selected to interview; you may not attend unless you are specifically invited to do so. You must submit a separate application package to each judge whom you would like to consider your application. The panel will only interview candidates who are seriously interested in being considered by a minimum of three of the participating judges.

The following six federal district judges will be participating in this law clerk interview session:

Judge Gerald Bruce Lee, E.D. Va. (Alexandria)
Judge Raymond Jackson, E.D. Va. (Norfolk)
Chief Judge James Spencer, E.D. Va. (Richmond)
Judge Richard W. Roberts, D.D.C.,
Judge Alexander Williams, D. Md. (Greenbelt)
Chief Judge Stephan Mickle, N.D. Fla. (Gainesville), by video.

Additionally, these six judges will be considering applicants for clerkships with Judge Irene Berger, S.D. W. Va. (Beckley), Judge Tanya Pratt (S.D. Ind.) and Chief Judge Curtis Gomez, D.V.I (St. Thomas/St. John). Please note that all clerkships are for one year terms.

Each judge will review applications and participate in deciding which students to invite to this special round of interviews.  Therefore, you must submit a separate application package to each judge whom you would like to consider your application.  The panel will only interview candidates who are seriously interested in being considered by a minimum of three of the participating judges.

The JTBF Share the Wealth Judicial Law Clerk Program is a referral program run by judges.  Participating judges screen qualified law student applicants, conduct panel interviews with twelve students, and consider them for clerkship positions.  At the conclusion of this initial process, students who are not extended an offer by one of the eight judges may have their application packages shared with additional judges who have requested to receive information on applicants through JTBF.  Many judges contact JTBF to seek assistance in identifying competitive candidates from diverse backgrounds for consideration.

For Students:

The Summer Legal Institutes and Middle School Law Camp for 2010 will conclude at the end of August: it's time to look to next year! Students interested in joining us for our intensive programs in the law should look for the program application on our website in the spring of 2011.

JTBF does not simply look for the brightest students; more than anything, a JTBF scholar has the brazen desire to enter the legal profession and is not afraid of the hard work required to attain that goal.

If you are a student who fits this profile, we would love to hear from you. Please contact JTBF Program Director, Paraisia Winston, at pwinston@jtbf.org or download an application from the Programs page and either fax or mail it in to the JTBF offices.
