Just The Beginning Foundation (“JTBF”) will hosts a five-day Middle School Law Camp for sixty-five area middle school students at DePaul University Law School from August 23 - August 27, 2010. The students will meet with a myriad of legal professionals, hear from guest speakers, visit federal court, participate in a mock trial, and prepare and present an oral argument. Over the course of the program, the students will meet attorneys in different areas of the law.

PROGRAM DATES

 Middle School Law Camp will run Monday, August 23 - Friday, August 27, 2010.

Program Costs 

The MSLC is free to the students.  JTBF will provide breakfast and lunch each day of the program.  Students are responsible for their transportation expenses the first day of the program.  JTBF will provide public transit cards for the remaining days of the program.

Application Process

The SLI program is open to current 6th, 7th and 8th .  To apply, a student must submit:

2.  Statement of Interest

3.  Copy of Report Card

4.  Completed Letter of Recommendation Form or a Separate Letter of Recommendation

2009 Highlights of the program included:

• Judicial panel discussion moderated by Judge Virginia Kendall and featuring Judge Arlander Keys and Judge Susan Cox
• Interactive legal panel discussion hosted by Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP
• Courtroom observations hosted by Chief Judge James Holderman and Judge Harry Lienweber
• U.S. Marshal’s demonstration led by Deputy U.S. Marshal Jim Miller
• Participation in a mock trial with students assisted by attorneys from Arnstein & Lehr LLP and Littler Mendelson LLP and presided over by judicial clerks of Judge Ruben Castillo. 
• Roundtable lunch discussions with attorneys from Schiff Hardin LLP, GE Capital, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP, Jenner & Block LLP, and Kirkland & Ellis LLP, and solo practitioner Gwen Duffield.
• An interactive Legal Ethics Workshop presented by Jayne Reardon of the Illinois Commission for Professionalism and Wendy Muchman of the Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission (ARDC)
• Student oral arguments on topics ranging from “Chocolate vs. Vanilla: Which Ice Cream Flavor is Better?” to “Kobe vs. LeBron: Who’s the Greatest Basketball Player?” while incorporating fictional cases, such as “Hamburger v. Hot Dog” and “Nike v. Reebok,” to support their argument. These arguments were judged by local practitioners and students from The John Marshall Law School.
